Hi folks, thanks for the warm welcome last week. I appreciated all the kind comments you left. Thus far I have about 50 names in the draw to win David duChemin’s next book “VisionMongers”. Keep ‘em coming. I’ll draw the winner in the next few weeks.

A few of you have asked about reading my recent essays for my Humanitarian Emergencies & Disaster Relief subject. This is part of my Masters in International and Community Development that I’m completing through Deakin University. I’ve included links to both essays for that subject below:

In other news, the countdown is on to the biennial beard-growing fest that is Whiskerino – Four months of beard-growing goodness! The event begins on November 1st and ends on February 28th next year. Participants are required to start clean-shaven and post regular pictures of their progress, with points awarded for creativity. I participated two years ago and made it to around the two-month mark. This year I hope to go the whole hog and will use it to raise funds for my pro bono projects for small local NGOs. I’m looking for people who would like to sponsor me and my beard for anywhere from $1 to $5 for every day I last in the event. It will be 120 grand days of unbridled hirsuteness! There are two ways you can help out, if you’re so inclined:

1. Email me at tim[at]fotofugitive[dot]com and make a pledge for whatever amount you can afford per day
2. Join me in participating in Whiskerino this year and ask your friends to sponsor you to raise money for fotofugitive projects (Get in quick on November 1st though, as numbers are limited and they fill fast!)

Hi folks and welcome on this auspicious suspicious occasion, the grand opening of … my blog I’m sure there will be thousands hundreds, well at least 2 readers – hi Mum & Dad I’m a newbie at this here blogging thangy, so do bear with me.

So, by way of introduction, hi I’m Tim. That’s me hangin’ in a Lao ricefield above. I’m an Aussie who grew up in Papua New Guinea as a Missionaries Kid, living in The highlands for four years and on a separate occasion in Lae for three years. This time led to a lifelong interest in cross-cultural communication and an affinity with people from various cultures. It’s also where my incurable wanderlust began. 

My background is a mix of international development and photography/visual art. I completed a degree with majors in International Development and Visual Art from Avondale College in 2005 and am currently studying for a Master’s in International and Community Development with Deakin University.  I’ve also had training in Monitoring & Evaluation and Project Planning from the ADRA Professional Leadership Institute. Most recently I spent two years with ADRA Laos as project coordinator, working on water & sanitation, health education, HIV/AIDS awareness and tobacco control projects. I also provided photography and graphic design and layout services for PR materials.

I’ve been a photographer since my Dad lent me his old pentax SLR when I was in high school. I was initially taken with landscape photography, until a trip to Cambodia in 2001 with camera in hand planted the humanitarian photography seed. It was, and remains, the perfect amalgamation of my passions, skills and interests.

And thus, I am a highly passionate humanitarian, world and cultural photographer and have produced images for ADRA Laos, ADRA Australia and Metamorphic International. I am currently working with Metamorphic as a photographer and project coordinator.

I’ve got lot’s of exciting travel and photography projects in the pipeline that I’m looking forward to sharing with you all.

Like many others, I’ve hit on the whole Social Media/Networking experience this past year, so you can find and connect with me via a number of venues, depending on your taste. You’ll have the most luck connecting with me on twitter, where I can be found @fotofugitive. Oh, and by way of celebrating the addition of one more blog to the cajillions out there on the innertwebs, I’m giving away a copy of new friend and mentor David duChemin’s greatly anticipated book ‘VisionMongers, Making a Life and a Living in Photography’ which I believe goes to press this week and will be available next month.
